I suppose that many of you have heard of the recent fall out in many evangelical circles following the release of Rob Bell's new book Love Wins. If not, you can read up on it here.
Now today, our local news released this article explaining how local pastor Chad Holtz was fired from his position as pastor after releasing his views on the subject on his blog, which you can read here.
Rather than offer a full explanation of my views here, I'll sum it up by saying that I think it was right that Mr. Holtz was fired. After reviewing several other pages on his website, I think what we find is a very good example of what happens when we become too smart for our own good.
Mr. Holtz, (and Mr. Bell for that matter) give us a good sampling of how, despite a vast knowledge of Scripture and theology, one can over-analyze a concept until all that's left are the weak dogmas of human wisdom, which have been "peppered" with Christian jargon.
God does not need our defense of His character, His ways, or His Wisdom. He does not need us to devise ways to explain why sin is uncomfortable and ugly. He does not need our "wisdom."
I pray that the Church will not give in to the error of thinking that a philosophical breakdown of God's Word will help us make peace with sin. I pray that the Church will not foster a warped understanding of wisdom.
"For it is written, 'I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.'"
